German students built the longest-range electric car with a range of 2,500 km (3 photos)

Students from the Technical University of Munich installed world record by building the longest-range electric car. Automobile called muc022 with a battery of only 15.5 kilowatt-hours was able cover 2575.8 kilometers on a single charge without using additional energy sources like solar panels.





Founded in the middle of the last decade, the TUfast Eco team is engaged in the construction of ultra-efficient electric vehicles and participates in them in various competitions and record races. Trying to show the best in world range on one charge among electric vehicles that do not have solar panels, TUfast Eco coincided with last week’s at the Munich automobile exhibition IAA Mobility and achieved success. The Muc022 electric car, equipped with batteries with a capacity of only 15.5 kWh, covered a distance of 2573.79 km in 99 hours and broke the 2017 record, installed by the American team IT Asset Partners - 1608.54 km.



The race took place in one of the empty hangars of the Munich airport so that the record does not break due to weather conditions. Members teams (pilots, mechanics) and observers spent the night here on folding beds, while Muc022 slowly made circles around the hangar. Battery was chosen based on the optimal balance between capacity and mass - The electric car without a driver weighs only 170 kg. Average energy consumption per driving time was 0.6 kWh per 100 km, while the best serial electric cars consume about 13 kWh per 100 km.



The design of Muc022 is quite mature: the body is based on carbon fiber monocoque reinforced with aluminum panels with honeycomb structure, it weighs only 18.6 kg. Aerodynamic coefficient resistance cx is 0.159. Overall length - 3400 mm, width - 1200 mm, height - 1000 mm. Front suspension - McPherson type, rear - on double wishbones, instead of traditional springs it is used lightweight elastomer. Carbon fiber wheels on thin tires with low Rolling resistance equipped with disc brakes. Steering to reduce weight it has a cable drive. Electrical architecture too lightweight, 48-volt, power of a single synchronous electric motor with permanent magnets - 400 W (0.544 hp). Maximum speed electric car and average speed during a record race in the press release is not specified, but it is clear that they are low.
