71-Year-Old American Woman Creates Women-Only Community (3 Photos)

Yerian began developing her project, dubbed "The Bird’s Nest," in 2022. Prior to that, she purchased a plot of land in Cumby, near Dallas, for $35,000 and spent an additional $150,000 improving the property. Robin also laid 14 300-square-foot concrete pads, which she rents to residents for $450 a month.





The close-knit community is currently home to 12 women over the age of 52 (mostly single, divorced, or widowed). All prospective residents undergo a rigorous vetting process and meet in person with the founder and current residents to make sure everyone is a good fit.

"For us, it's all about community," Robin notes. "It’s a safe place where women can live without fear and without having to look over their shoulder when they open their front door."

Word about the project has already spread fast. Whenever a spot opens up in the community, interest is overwhelming—last summer alone, around 500 women applied.



Residents also have access to a shared outdoor kitchen, vegetable gardens, fire pits, and a hen house.

"We step in to help if someone gets sick or needs a ride to physical therapy or the doctor. We walk our dogs together and look after each other's pets when someone goes on vacation. We do everything best friends normally do," Yerian said.

She noted that the women frequently cook and share meals in the communal kitchen, as well as lend a hand with home repairs. The founder has even hosted hands-on construction workshops for the residents.
