Locals Hauled Away Cartloads of Bottles—Only to Face Disappointment at Home (2 photos)

A bizarre accident occurred recently at the roundabout connecting Tvaika and Sliežu streets in Riga's Sarkandaugava district. A truck misjudged a turn, sending hundreds of beer bottles spilling across the road—some shattered on impact, while local residents quickly moved in to scavenge the surviving packs.





According to the driver, the vehicle clipped the curb, causing the load to shift and tumble onto the roadway. Mounds of broken glass quickly littered the intersection, requiring immediate cleanup to prevent blown tires and injuries.

While crews worked to clear the debris, opportunistic passersby decided to make the most of the situation and stock up on intact bottles. Some residents even turned up with shopping carts, trying to haul away as much as they could carry.

However, as it later turned out, the cargo was non-alcoholic beer.

Beverage manufacturer Cido Grupa reported that the undamaged portion of the cargo was taken to a warehouse for quality checks and loss assessment. The company emphasized that neither the carrier nor the product owner gave authorization for anyone to take bottles from the crash site.

The road was cleared shortly after, leaving behind only a few scattered shards of glass.
