Tat Kuang Si Waterfall, Luang Prabang, Laos

Tat Kuang Si is a waterfall located approximately 32 km south of Luang Prabang on the left bank of the Mekong River, within the national park of the same name. The waterfall consists of a main 54-meter-high waterfall and a series of smaller cascades. Ten meters below the second cascade is a small cave. Between the cascades are several pools of deep turquoise water.



The unusual color is caused by the water flowing through limestone cliffs and limestone-containing soil layers, actively converting the calcium carbonate present into soluble calcium bicarbonate due to the high carbon dioxide content of the groundwater. Calcium bicarbonate is unstable and precipitates as a crystalline precipitate at the bottom, forming a strata. These dissolved carbonates give the water in the waterfall's pools a deep turquoise color. A number of other waterfalls in Southeast Asia have similar properties. One of the most famous is Erawan in Thailand.



The water flow at Tat Kuang Si varies greatly depending on the season, as a significant portion of the water fed by the waterfall comes from rainfall. It is at its fullest from August to November. Tat Kuang Si is located on a mountainside covered in dense vegetation, primarily mixed deciduous forest. The waterfall is popular with locals, who come here on weekends for swimming and family picnics. An entrance fee of 20,000 kip is required to maintain the area around the waterfall and the surrounding forest. A trail runs along the waterfall. Below the main tier is a bridge and a staircase leading to the top of the cliff.
