Japan holds "bear drills" following a series of bear attacks (2 photos + 1 video)
Japanese schools have begun conducting drills to prepare for potential bear incursions. During the exercise, a man in a bear costume simulates an attack on the school grounds or inside the building, while teachers and hunters practice emergency response and coordination.
Teachers practice coordinated student evacuation procedures, while hunters train in emergency response and teamwork to shoot the animal if necessary. One of the drill participants plays the role of the bear.
These drills are being held against the backdrop of a rising number of bear attacks across the country. Earlier this month, nearly 100 schools in the city of Utsunomiya were closed due to bear sightings.
