Trump had the Lincoln Pool painted; the paint peeled off (5 photos)
Donald Trump couldn't ignore such a pressing national issue as the color of the Lincoln Memorial pool. After cursing it out loud, he decided to redo the entire thing. And so it began.
For $14 million—well, of course, patriotism comes at a price—the pool was completely renovated. Although they initially said $2 million would be enough, beauty comes at a price. The contract was a no-bid (no competitive bid) to the company that supposedly built Trump's pools.
The main innovation: the bottom was painted American Flag Blue. That same deep blue of the American flag. Beautiful, powerful, and so Republican.
The sun, which had previously shone calmly through the old paint, now reflected off the proud new American seabed in a completely different way. The water became the perfect environment for algae. They felt like they were in a five-star spa: warm, bright, nourishing. The pool started turning green faster than Trump can type tweets.
The experts scratched their heads and decided, "Let's throw in some hydrogen peroxide, it kills everything." They did. The peroxide actually did a good job... of removing the paint.
The new coat of American Flag Blue paint has begun to happily peel off in chunks and float to the surface. Now the pool looks like it was stripped bare after a bad thrift store shopping trip.
FOR SALE: A chunk of American Flag Blue paint for $250. This is your chance to own a piece of history! Celebrate our 250th anniversary with this chunk of latex paint. Just removed from the green waters of the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The estimated value is $14 million in taxpayer money.
Trump, in his usual style, declared them vandals. Several people have already been arrested. The National Guard is on duty, patrolling, and the pool is being drained again to restore it to some degree of normalcy. Basically, they wanted a patriotic glow for the 250th anniversary of the United States on July 4th, but what they got was a green and blue abstraction with floating debris.
