They were brought in a box! The crew of the Titan bathyscaphe was found and raised from the depths! (4 photos)

The tragedy of the Titan submersible didn't end on the day of the disaster. For the families of the victims, it continued for years, right up until the moment when they were finally given back what had been recovered from the ocean floor.

The Titan submersible found on the ocean floor

As The Guardian reported on April 30, relatives of the five people on board have only now received the remains of their loved ones.

One of them is Christine Dawood. Her husband, Shahzada Dawood, and their 19-year-old son, Suleiman, were among the passengers. The woman admitted that what she was given was difficult to reconcile with the conventional notion of the human body.

Everything was placed in small containers and appeared as a homogeneous mass with no clear outlines.

The reason is the extreme conditions at a depth of approximately four kilometers. The pressure there is so great that it destroys any structure almost instantly. Under such conditions, bodies lose their shape and become virtually unrecognizable.

Science versus the Deep

After the disaster, experts began a long and complex process. They were forced to reconstruct the identities of the victims through genetic analysis—the only reliable method in such conditions.

But even this proved limited. Some fragments were so damaged and mixed together that their identity could not be determined. This added even more uncertainty and pain to the families.

The Day It All Ended

The expedition, which ended so tragically, began on June 19, 2023. The Titan submersible headed for the wreck of the Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean.

Contact with the submersible was lost approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into the dive. It was later determined that a devastating incident had occurred, leaving no chance for the passengers.

According to CNN, everything happened in an instant.

Five on board

Inside the submersible were:

— explorer and entrepreneur Hamish Harding;

— businessman Shahzada Dawood;

— his son Suleiman;

— experienced French deep-sea diver Paul-Henri Nargolet;

— and Stockton Rush, the head of OceanGate, who operated the submersible.

The story of the Titan is more than just a tale of technical disaster. It is a reminder of how fragile humans remain in the face of natural forces, especially in the pressure, darkness, and absolute silence of the ocean depths.
