Morskoy the disaster could have been prevented: a 300-page report on the investigation into the death of the Titan deep-sea vehicle was published in the US (6 photos + 1 video)

Five people died in the 2023 tragedy.

In June 2023, a tragedy occurred with the deep-sea vehicle Titan, owned by the company OceanGate. During an expedition to the sunken Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean, the bathyscaphe crashed at a depth of about 3,800 meters. There were five people on board: OceanGate founder Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani-British businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleiman, as well as former military diver and Titanic explorer Paul-Henri Narjol, 77, who helped Rush control the apparatus. They all died instantly.

All that remains of the Titan

An investigation by the US Coast Guard showed that the cause of the disaster was implosion - the instantaneous destruction of the hull due to enormous water pressure. The 300-plus page report found numerous safety violations by OceanGate, including poor design, poor certification, improper maintenance, and ignoring safety alerts. It also had a toxic corporate culture that made matters worse.

If anyone wants to build a deep-sea vehicle that dies immediately after diving, they should follow in the footsteps of the engineers who designed and fine-tuned the very Titan of the company's CEO who was responsible for these mistakes. Namely:

— Make the bathyscaphe from a fragile carbon composite instead of the usual steel;

— Glue the individual fragments (carbon body and titanium hemispheres) together with almost "Moment" glue, and replace the recommended 18 bolts for attaching the hatch with four.

— In order to reduce the cost of the model, order a porthole certified for a depth of 650 meters. At the same time, it is possible to dive to 4000 m (to be sure);

— Do not build a hangar for the bathyscaphe, let it stand outside for 7 months in the sun and rain, freeze, defrost, losing integrity;

— To bypass the law on passenger transportation and unnecessary checks, call tourists "members of a special mission";

— Even if during the test dive everyone present heard a loud crack, pretend that nothing happened;

— An entire association of marine engineers wrote a letter that such an approach "could lead to catastrophic consequences"? Ignore - people may just be jealous.

The submarine did not undergo proper preventive maintenance before the 2023 dive, and previous hull anomalies remained uncorrected. According to experts, the water pressure at depth reached about 350 kilograms per square centimeter, which instantly destroyed the apparatus and took the lives of everyone on board. The report recommends strengthening international regulation and oversight of the safety of innovative underwater technologies.

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush

Following the disaster, OceanGate ceased operations. The debris and remains recovered from the seabed were handed over to authorities for further investigation.

Raising the Remains of the Titan Bathyscaphe from the Bottom of the Atlantic

After this report, which took nearly 2 years of investigation, one thing is clear: if the head of the Titan operator OceanGate had survived, Stockton Rush would certainly have been brought to trial. This tragedy has become a lesson in the importance of strict safety rules when diving to extreme depths and the need to pay close attention to technical protocols in the field of underwater research.
