In Poland, the appearance of a "vampire" has been reconstructed (2 photos)
Archaeologists in Poland have reconstructed the face of a woman who lived approximately 400 years ago and was buried with extremely unusual "protective" objects. According to the researchers, a sickle was placed around her neck—a weapon often used in such burials for a reason: it was believed that if the body attempted to "rise," the sharp blade would immobilize it or symbolically sever its connection with the world of the living. Additionally, a padlock was attached to her toe—another ritual element intended to "seal" the deceased in the grave, according to folk belief. This facial reconstruction has revealed for the first time what this woman, who became part of ancient fears and legends about the "returning dead," might have looked like.
