A man won $167 million in the lottery, then robbed a house: the lucky millionaire was arrested for the third time (2 photos + 1 video)
In the US, a man who won one of the largest Powerball jackpots last year has been arrested on suspicion of breaking into a home and stealing $12,000. This is at least his third run-in with the law since becoming a multimillionaire.
The man in question is 51-year-old James Farthing, who was arrested in Kentucky on charges of burglary and illegal possession of marijuana.
On March 28, cameras captured a man standing near the side door of a woman's home in Lexington before breaking in. The victim heard a loud noise, similar to a door being kicked in, and later discovered $12,000 missing.
Police subsequently located Farthing at a casino and a racetrack and arrested him in connection with the crime. During a search of his car, officers also found marijuana and several joints, including one half-burned cigarette, in an ashtray, after which they added another charge to the case.
Farthing's Record
In April 2025, he and his mother won $167 million in the Powerball lottery, the largest jackpot in state history. After winning, they were faced with a decision: receive the entire amount in installments over 29 years or take the $77.3 million lump sum.
However, just a few days after winning, he found himself at the center of a scandal. In Florida, he was charged with violating parole by leaving Kentucky without permission, as well as fighting with a hotel guest and a local sheriff's deputy.
Farthing later pleaded guilty in court as part of a plea bargain. He paid a $1,000 fine, avoiding jail time.
In February 2026, Kentucky law enforcement arrested him on suspicion of attempting to intimidate a participant in a lawsuit. According to investigators, he allegedly forced the woman to consume marijuana-laced edibles. After she contacted police, officers found drugs and weapons at the scene.
Farthing is currently scheduled to appear in court on a home invasion charge, as well as a separate charge of intimidation. He also faces another charge of fleeing the scene of an accident.
