A calculator for $600
Japanese company Casio has released a premium version of the S100X calculator. The calculator's case features traditional Japanese hand-painting using lacquer tree sap. The device is a limited edition. According to the brand, it takes a master craftsman a month to create one.
Casio has released the S100X—a standard calculator with a segmented LCD screen. It features currency conversion, tax calculation, and a 12-digit display. Nothing special, except that it looks like a museum piece.
The work was done by master craftsman Ryuji Umeda of Yamakyu Shitsuki, a company that has been lacquering since 1930. Each calculator takes a month to create by hand.
The glossy black case has warm red highlights along the edges. The display is tinted blue to match the ink of a fountain pen. It is powered by a solar panel and a button cell battery, which lasts for seven years with an hour of use per day.
Limited edition of 650 copies worldwide. Price: 99,000 yen.
