A record-breaking motorcycle that looks like a rocket will be auctioned off (8 photos)
This unusual racing car holds at least two world speed records.
A remarkable vehicle will be auctioned at Mecum Auctions in late March. It is not road legal, and its unusual appearance explains its intended purpose. It is the first two-wheeler in the world to exceed 300 mph (483 km/h). The expected price for this world-famous motorcycle has not been specified.
The record was set in 1975 by superbike builder Don Vesco at the Bonneville Salt Flats. A motorcycle with its own name, the Silver Bird, reached a speed of 305.5 mph (487.6 km/h). At the time, the record-breaker was powered by two Yamaha TZ750 engines.
Later, Don Vesco replaced the engines with liter-sized Kawasaki engines, renaming the Silver Bird the Lightning Bolt. This allowed him to improve his own record to 311.8 mph (511.8 km/h), a record that wasn't broken until 12 years later. That same year, 1978, Don Vesco became the only motorcycle rider to win the Hot Rod magazine special award at the Bonneville Speed Weeks event, beating all the cars competing.
The auctioneers are not revealing the Lightning Bolt's subsequent history or the current condition of the record-breaking superbike.
