Kurt Cobain's Death May Have Been Murder, Not Suicide (5 photos)

A team of forensic scientists has decided to thoroughly examine the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. They analyzed the autopsy materials and crime scene data. New private forensic reports cast doubt on the suicide theory.

A team of forensic scientists has re-examined the crime scene materials and autopsy results. Brian Burnett, a specialist previously involved in overdose and gunshot wound cases, was brought in for this, the Daily Mail reports.

Independent investigator Michelle Wilkins, who worked with the team, said that after just three days of reviewing the evidence, Burnett told her, "This is murder. Something needs to be done about it."

Ten pieces of evidence have been presented suggesting that Cobain was confronted by his attackers, who first incapacitated him with an overdose, then shot him in the head, planting the gun in his hands and leaving a fake suicide note.

It is noted that Cobain's sleeves were rolled up, and the drug kit was found quite far from him;

"Are we supposed to believe he covered the needles and cleaned everything up after three injections?" Wilkins said.

Cobain's autopsy revealed fluid in his lungs, bleeding in his eyes, and damage to his brain and liver. These findings are unusual for a rapid death, but are common in overdose deaths;

Bleeding from the eye and organ damage indicated that his body may have been deprived of oxygen, likely due to more than just the gunshot;

The brain stem, which controls breathing, was likely intact, and the position of the hand indicated a lack of the posture typically seen with brain stem damage;

Wilkins argues that Cobain may have been physically immobilized before the fatal shot;

She added that the size and mechanics of the gun make it unlikely that Cobain, especially in his overdose state, could have handled it;

The position of Cobain's hands and the lack of blood spatter raised new questions. His left hand was firmly grasping the muzzle of the gun, but the shell casing was found in a pile of clothing in the opposite direction of ejection.

Wilkins noted blood samples indicating possible movement of the body;

"There's blood on his shirt, too. The only way blood could have gotten on his shirt is if Kurt had been lifted and his head down," she noted.

The alleged suicide note has also been subjected to close analysis.

"The top part of the note is Kurt's. There's nothing about suicide. It's basically just talk about leaving the band. And then at the bottom are four lines that are slightly different. They're larger and look more casual," Wilkes concluded.
