In Canada, a DNA test showed that the woman is not a purebred dog (3 photos)
The woman was found to be 25% Labrador and 35% Shar Pei.
Reporter Christina Hager and the I-Team from WBZ-TV News decided to check out three companies that do DNA tests on animals to determine their purebred and genomic makeup. Journalists sent their own instead of dog swabs. Two firms said there was insufficient data for analysis, but a third accepted the swabs and even provided the results.
It turned out that Christina Hager is 25% Labrador and 35% Shar Pei, and 40% Alaskan Malamute, CBS News reports. Interestingly, this is not the first time the company has produced incorrect results. Several years ago, Michelle Leininger from New Hampshire learned that she was 50% bulldog.
Geneticist Elinor Carlsson of the Eli and Edith L. Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard said DNA tests are useful for identifying predispositions to genetic diseases in dogs.
