The crime, which had long puzzled police, occurred in the home of Martin and Glenna Durham in Michigan (USA) in 2015.
Investigators then found Martin's body, stabbed five times by gunshots, lying next to Glenna, who had been shot in the head with the same weapon and was still breathing. Glenna claimed she remembered nothing and didn't see the shooter.
While the crime scene was being investigated, an African grey parrot named Bud began repeating the same phrase in an angry voice similar to Martin's: "Don't shoot... don't shoot!" Martin's parents were concerned about the bird's words. They suspected that Bud might have overheard the couple's argument and remembered their son's last words.
It turned out that the bird was adept at remembering and reproducing what it heard, so prosecutors even considered using Bud's words in court, but ultimately decided against it, considering the parrot an unreliable witness. However, other evidence pointed to Glenna. It was established that the couple had suffered serious financial problems, primarily related to gambling.
At the trial, Glenna, who survived a head wound, acted "unemotional," but the jury unanimously found her guilty of murdering her husband. The court sentenced her to life imprisonment. The parrot was later adopted by Martin's ex-wife.
