Saving at the max: A vengeful tenant turned a Quebec apartment into an icy hell (4 photos + 1 video)
If you thought your Wi-Fi-stealing neighbor was the most frugal person in the world, here's a hero from Canada. This "energy-saving master" decided not to feed the greedy power grids, but simply turned off the heat in his two-story apartment.
In the Canadian town of Trois-Rivières, an apartment was discovered that could be used to film a horror movie about permafrost. The tenant, who turned out to be a creative individual, had a falling out with the landlord, hadn't lived there for several months, and hadn't paid rent. So he decided to save on electricity one last time (or just piss off the owner), turned off the heat, and went on indefinite leave.
For Quebec, where frosts are no joke, this ended in disaster. When the owner arrived at the house, he found not just a "mess," but a veritable "ice castle." The pipes had burst, turning the two-story apartment into a giant freezer. Ice had encased everything: from the kitchen cabinets, from which stalactites hang, to the washing machine, where someone's socks were forever frozen.
The ice on the kitchen floor is up to 30 centimeters deep, and water has soaked the walls and ceilings. Now, instead of a cosmetic renovation, the apartment faces complete deconstruction.
The owner, shocked, says: "There's water in the walls, in the ceiling, everywhere. Now mold will grow there, and we'll have to tear everything down to the frame and dry it out."
It seems an attempt to save on a couple of kilowatts has turned into a bill for tens of thousands of dollars, which the "thrifty" tenant will have to pay in court. The apartment will literally have to be rebuilt from scratch. Insurance will likely cover part of the cost, but the owner admits he's never seen such an "extreme case" in his life.
