In Canada, Santa and elves robbed a store for those in need (4 photos + 1 video)
A gang dressed as Santa Claus and his elves stormed a Metro store in Montreal around 9:15 PM on Monday. The costumed men filled their bags with $3,000 worth of merchandise and fled. They later posted a statement on social media claiming they were distributing food to the poor and that their actions were a response to the soaring cost of living.
Activists known as the Robins des ruelles, or "Robins of the Alleys," claimed responsibility for the unusual robbery.
Stolen food was distributed under a Christmas tree in the Montreal area. Some of the food was placed in public refrigerators.
The group called the theft a "grocery shopping spree," justifying their actions by arguing that supermarkets are using inflation as an excuse to raise prices despite earning record profits.
"A handful of corporations are holding us hostage. They continue to exploit the population, pumping out as much money as possible. For us, this is theft, and they are the real bandits," the group said in a statement on the Les Soulèvements du Fleuve social media page.
The online reaction was generally positive. However, Metro spokesperson Genevieve Gregoire emphasized that theft, regardless of the cause, remains a crime.
Gregoire added that in 2025, the company participated in several charitable initiatives, including donating $1.15 million to food banks and donating millions of dollars worth of food.
Police are currently reviewing video footage of the incident. No arrests have been made.
