A 1953 Cisitalia 808XF coupe sold for $280,000 at the Bring a Trailer auction. This model nearly became Ford's first full-fledged grand tourer, but instead remained a unique prototype. The car remained in the same family since 1960.
The collaboration between the Turin-based Cisitalia and Ford was initiated by Henry Ford II. The result was intended to expand the brand's model lineup with a European-style coupe based on available Ford engines. Cisitalia built a prototype on its own chassis with a body designed by Ghia and sent it to the United States for approval. But Ford's accountants decided the project wouldn't be profitable.
About a year after the project's completion, the 808XF fell into private hands. The current owner has owned the car since 1977, but he purchased it from his aunt and uncle, who had owned it since 1960. Auctioneers claim the prototype has been under restoration since then. The body was completely restored, the frame was rebuilt, new bumpers were made, and the interior was restyled.
The Cisitalia 808XF retains the original engine but has a new stainless steel exhaust system. The coupe is powered by a 4.2-liter Mercury V8 with two carburetors. Initially, it came with an automatic transmission, but it was later replaced with a three-speed manual from Ford.
