China has executed Bai Tianhui, former CEO of the investment company China Huarong International Holdings, who was convicted of accepting especially large bribes—more than 1.108 billion yuan ($156 million). China Central Television reported the execution.
"With the approval of the Supreme People's Court, on the morning of December 9, 2025, the Second Intermediate People's Court of Tianjin City carried out the death sentence against Bai Tianhui," the TV channel reported.
The investigation established that Tianhui abused his official position to obtain illegal benefits between 2014 and 2018. The top manager was sentenced to death in 2024. In addition to his life sentence, the authorities stripped him of all political rights and all personal property acquired through "backbreaking labor."
Bai Tianhui's defense attempted to appeal the court's decision, but the appeal was rejected. The court upheld the decision and the findings of the lower courts, stating that the size of the bribes and the severity of the consequences required severe punishment.
It was reported that in September of this year, the court sentenced former Agriculture Minister Tang Renjian to death with a two-year reprieve. The minister's total bribes were slightly smaller than Tianhui's—268 million yuan. He was also stripped of all political rights for life, and his property and illicit income were confiscated for the state.
