Rodellar Arch: a mountain with a hole through which they defy heaven and fate (8 photos + 1 video)
"A hole in the wall" is often used to describe cozy, intimate establishments. But in the mountains of Spain, there's a place where this metaphor takes on a literal and grandiose meaning.
The Rodellar region in the Sierra de Guara mountains is a mecca for rock climbers from all over the world, offering some of the most challenging and unique routes on the planet. And the crowning glory is "The Hole in Rodellar." And it is, quite literally, a hole in the rock.
Only the cliff here is a whole mountain, and the notorious hole is a more than thirty-meter-high arch, as if deliberately punched through the thickness of the stone.
It is the goal, the challenge, that draws hundreds of the most daring and experienced climbers here every year. They make a pilgrimage to Rodellar to climb up, down, and even upside down its many bizarre formations.
There's no natural wonder more unique than a hole that runs right through the mountain. As you climb the increasingly challenging terrain, from vertical to horizontal, breathtaking views unfold before the climber's eyes on both sides of this gigantic rock frame.
However, the faint of heart need not fear: this remote and striking landscape offers equally enjoyable viewing. Besides the famous Hole, there are other arches, curves, and rocky ridges that you can admire without the slightest risk to your life.
