A Tesla electric car was hit by a meteorite: the driver was saved by the FSD autopilot (3 photos)
A Model Y owner claims that without the company's "Autopilot" system, the incident could have ended badly.
A curious incident has been reported in Australia. According to Autoevolution, a meteorite struck the windshield of a Tesla Model Y. The driver claims that Tesla's FSD semi-autonomous driving system saved his life during the incident.
The electric car was driving on the highway at night at about 110 km/h when it hit hard. The interior filled with shards of glass and smoke. The owner managed to stop the car and, after inspecting the outside, found the meteorite's impact site. Aside from a partially melted impact mark on the windshield, no other damage was found, although it initially appeared that the Model Y had struck something.
The owner stated that if not for the FSD system, which was controlling the electric car at the time of the impact, the accident would have occurred. After the impact, he said, he was completely disoriented and unable to control the car properly, but the incident did not affect the electronics' functionality.
The electric car has now been sent for analysis to an Australian meteorite research center. The publication notes that if official confirmation of the collision is received, the incident would be unprecedented. The odds of a meteorite colliding with a moving car are one in a billion. The odds of winning the lottery jackpot are estimated at approximately one in 8 million.
