A compact Yasa electric motor produced over 1000 horsepower (2 photos)

The British company managed to achieve this power from a unit weighing 13 kg.

The startup Yasa, which has been owned by Mercedes-Benz since 2021, announced a new version of its axial flux electric motor prototype, also known as a disk motor.

In such units, the magnetic flux runs parallel to the axis of rotation, unlike traditional radial motors, where it runs perpendicular to the axis. This design is claimed to deliver greater power and torque with reduced size and weight.

The latest iteration of the experimental motor weighs just 13 kg. In bench tests, it produced 1006 hp, or a record 79 hp (59 kW) per kilogram. The previous version of their electric motor produced 57 hp under similar conditions.

It's worth noting that this refers to short-term peak power. Continuous power ranges from 476 to 612 hp. However, Yasa assures that this is a fully functional prototype, manufactured without the use of exotic or expensive materials, and can be scaled to suit specific applications.

If mass production begins, the innovative disc electric motors will be first installed in vehicles bearing the three-pointed star, namely the flagship super sedan and crossover. However, no timeline for the implementation has yet been announced.
