Key facts about the cancellation of the Gladiator 4xe
Jeep strategy changes
Last year brought significant changes to the Jeep brand, and that process continues. Then-Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa announced plans to launch the Gladiator 4xe in 2025. Today, Filosa has moved on to become CEO of Stellantis, and the hybrid pickup project has been canceled.
Technical features of the canceled model
The model was originally supposed to join the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe lineup, which quickly became some of the most popular plug-in hybrids in America. The Gladiator 4xe was supposed to borrow a lot from the Wrangler, namely: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor. This was supposed to provide the pickup with a combined power of 375 hp and a range on electric power alone of about 20 miles.
Official confirmation and comments
The automaker informed suppliers of the immediate cancellation of the project. A brand representative stated:
Jeep has already begun reallocating funds to ensure the long-term growth of the Gladiator model and will introduce additional features, customization and new powertrain options in the near future that customers have requested.
It’s a rather vague statement, but in a letter to suppliers, the cancellation is attributed to the evolution of customer preferences for powertrain types. The company added that
it is reviewing its product strategy and will no longer include an electrified version of the Gladiator in the Jeep lineup.
Context and reasons for the decision
This decision is disappointing, especially given the success of the Wrangler 4xe. However, the tax credit for environmentally friendly vehicles ends this month, which is likely also a factor in the decision. Gladiator sales haven’t been particularly successful either, with just 42,125 units sold in the US last year, down more than 50% from 89,712 sold in 2021. However, sales have increased 8% in the first half of this year to 25,400 units.
New color for 2026 models
On the other hand, Jeep has announced the return of its purple color, called Reign. This shade will be available on the 2026 Wrangler and Gladiator.
The company is already taking orders and said the color was brought back due to “popular demand.” It first appeared on the 2018 Wrangler and is aimed at buyers who are “passionate about purple.”
The Gladiator 4xe’s cancellation comes amid a general trend among automakers to reevaluate their electric and hybrid plans. While demand for green vehicles continues to grow, specific market conditions, such as the end of government incentives, could dramatically change the economic feasibility of such projects. For Jeep, it could also be an opportunity to focus on improving traditional powertrains or developing all-electric versions that can better meet future demands. The return of the popular Reign color, meanwhile, suggests the brand is continuing to look for ways to boost the appeal of its existing models to support sales.
