Why the base version of the Peugeot 308 is smarter than the top-of-the-line GT model (2 photos)
Updated Peugeot 308 lineup
Recently, Peugeot introduced an updated version of the 308 in hatchback and station wagon bodies, which is already available in European markets. After analyzing the official configurator, it turned out that the basic Style trim level has significant standard equipment and one interesting feature that the flagship GT Exclusive version lacks.
Physical climate control buttons
These are physical climate controls, which are represented by two rotary switches and several buttons located under the central touchscreen. This configuration is available in the Style, Business and Allure trim levels. However, the GT and GT Exclusive models have received “Peugeot i-toggles” touch-sensitive hot keys. This means that to adjust the temperature you need to look at the screen and touch the desired area, which can be distracting while driving.
Equipment of the basic version
Interestingly, the most affordable 308 Style trim level gets a 10-inch multimedia system and a 10-inch digital instrument panel as standard, although it uses lower-quality materials compared to higher trim levels. The equipment also includes dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, electric and heated mirrors, as well as a six-speaker audio system.
In addition, the exterior retains the sporty bumpers and full LED lighting introduced as part of the update, combined with black 16-inch alloy wheels.
The flagship GT Exclusive trim
At the opposite end of the spectrum is the flagship Peugeot 308 GT Exclusive trim, which features diamond-cut 18-inch alloy wheels, sharper side skirts, a corresponding front bumper extension and an illuminated sector on the radiator grille, which is combined with an illuminated Peugeot logo and matrix LED headlights.
Inside, the GT Exclusive gets a revised instrument cluster with 3D graphics, ambient lighting, Alcantara upholstery and the 360 Vision & Drive Assist Plus Pack, which enables Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities. Options include a 10-speaker Focal audio system, a sunroof, wireless smartphone charging, all-season tires and a retractable traction control.
Powertrain options and prices
The updated Peugeot 308 is available with micro-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The most powerful version is the PHEV with a combined output of 192 hp. The Style trim level is only available on the micro-hybrid and fully electric variants, so those who want the PHEV and physical climate controls will have to upgrade to the Business or Allure trim levels.
The most affordable Peugeot 308 Style Hybrid 145 in France starts at €28,390, while the flagship GT Exclusive trim with the same engine costs €33,277. The most expensive option is the 308 GT Exclusive Plug-in Hybrid 195 at €39,780, €461 more than the equivalent Electrique 156.
Market trends and future expectations
Fortunately, most automakers have realized that customers want simple buttons and switches for key functions instead of having to navigate complex multimedia menus or use touch controls. In this context, future Stellantis models are expected to receive a practical solution for climate control, from the basic trim to the flagship versions.
It’s interesting that even in the digital age, entry-level cars sometimes offer more convenient features than their more expensive counterparts. This shows how manufacturers are balancing innovation with practicality, taking into account consumer feedback. The rise of physical controls could influence the design of future models, not just within Stellantis, but across the automotive industry.
