Australian man broke a woman's ribs for a remark about a dog (4 photos)
Katie Mackenzie, 60, was walking along Peregian Beach in southeast Queensland when she spotted a man with a dog. She pointed out the no-pets sign to the stranger. At that moment, 28-year-old Thomas Keys attacked the woman.
"I ended up on the ground... I didn't know what was happening," Katie said.
The man knocked Mackenzie down and fled with his dog.
Three witnesses ran to her semi-conscious body and remained there until paramedics arrived. The victim was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage, five broken ribs, a fractured sacrum, and several foot injuries.
CCTV footage shows a man and his dog leaving the beach after the incident.
Three months later, Thomas Keys was arrested and charged with grievous bodily harm. He faces trial at the end of the month.
Mackenzie wanted to share her story to highlight the challenges facing victims of violence in Australia.
"Violence cannot be justified, and we need better support systems for victims. I was attacked by a stranger, but women who experience domestic violence (and some men) often fail for various reasons. People trying to cope with trauma face additional challenges. They say justice delayed is justice denied." “And while our legal system operates at a snail’s pace, we must not remain silent,” the woman said.
