A rare Ford Mustang with a 9.8-liter engine is up for sale (40 photos)
The engine produces 1,062 horsepower and is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. The car is currently listed for $105,000 at an online auction, but there are still a few days left.
This is a 1969 Boss 429. It originally had a 7.0-liter V8. It didn't fit under the hood, so the suspension had to be modified and the battery moved to the trunk. This model was produced as part of a homologation run for a NASCAR race car. A total of 1,358 cars were built over two years.
Officially, the engine produced 375 horsepower. However, it is believed that the road-going version produced around 500, while the NASCAR version produced 600. In 2018, the car was rebuilt. The engine was replaced with a 9.8-liter unit with a 15:1 compression ratio, which dyno-tested 1,062 horsepower. The coupe has 100,000 kilometers on the odometer.
Despite the dramatic increase in power, the Mustang Boss 429 is otherwise almost identical to the original. It even retains the rear drum brakes and the original radio. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission and a carbon fiber driveshaft.
