A Hairdresser Saved a Client's Life After Noticing a Lump on His Neck (4 photos)
British man Owen Norgrove visited barber Firat Davutoğlu for another haircut. While shaving the back of his head, the barber noticed a lump and advised the 17-year-old client to get checked out.
The teenager didn't delay his visit to the doctor and underwent the necessary tests just a week later. It turned out he had Hodgkin's lymphoma, a malignant disease of lymphoid tissue.
The diagnosis, made last January, changed the lives of Owen and his family. He completed chemotherapy and is now in remission. He returned to the salon the other day and recalled his last visit: "Firat stopped abruptly and said, 'Have you noticed a lump on your neck? You should see a doctor.' I am incredibly grateful to him. He noticed the lump and informed me, even though it wasn't his job. If it hadn't been for his attentiveness, the situation could have become much more serious."
Davutoğlu, owner of New Styles barbershop in the historic market town, was delighted to have his client back.
The barber hadn't seen Owen in almost a year: "He came with his father, and I didn't recognize him because of his hair loss from chemotherapy. My father told me the whole story. He beat cancer, and that's the most important thing. He's healthy, and I believe he has a long and happy life ahead of him. May he never know illness or doctors again."
45-year-old Hayley, Owen's mother, shared: "The diagnosis was last January. By then, there was already a noticeable lump on his neck. Firat's comment allowed us to detect the disease at an early stage, which increased his chances of recovery."
She continued: "At that age, you just don't expect cancer; it was a shock to everyone. His age and fortitude helped him overcome the disease. My son plays rugby and farms, which has also been beneficial for him."
