A Cat Wins the "Bike Path Mayor" Election in the US (12 photos)
Somerville, Massachusetts, held an election for "Bike Lane Mayor." More than six thousand people came out to vote for one of 70 candidates.
In Massachusetts, Minerva the cat won the "Bike Lane Mayor" election. Her campaign slogan was "Crime."
It all started with a Somerville resident who symbolically appointed her cat, Berry, as the "mayor" of the local bike path last summer. Upon learning of this, other residents believed their pets deserved the title as well and held an election.
This year, the neighbors staged a real election: they put up campaign posters and nominated more than 70 candidates, including cats, dogs, birds, turtles, and even snakes.
Voting lasted two weeks, and slogans like "Boxes, not corruption" and "Make shoelaces long again" made the campaign seem like a parody of big politics.
