The Doomsday Queen stocked up on provisions for a year ahead (7 photos)
Crystal Frugal, 37, started canning food when she was just four years old. Now, the self-described "Doomsday Queen" has a year's worth of food for her family of five in case of an emergency.
Every year, she grows about 800 pounds of fresh produce. Among them are potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, beans, peaches, apples, and pumpkins. All of this for her husband, 41, and three children: ages 13, 12, and 8.
Crystal regularly stocks her pantry. She always has freeze-dried foods like ribeye steaks, mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, and pumpkin pie in stock. They can last up to 25 years.
She's prepared for any disaster, from wars to inflation, and is currently working on creating a five-year food supply.
The Salt Lake City, Utah-based content creator explained, "We have to be prepared for uncertainty. Go back four years. Supply chains were disrupted and inflation was skyrocketing. We weren't afraid of empty shelves and high prices. We had everything we needed."
Crystal has been living this lifestyle since she was four years old. Her late grandparents, Adele and Clyde, taught her how to grow fruits and vegetables.
"My family has always been prepared for emergencies," she says. "I've been canning for over 30 years, and I've only thrown out three jars."
She buys her meat from a local farmer and spends $600 a month on food she can't grow.
“I grow everything from tomatoes, carrots, greens, and peas to artichokes, squash, and grapes. We also keep a cow and a pig. When I see a discount on pasta, I buy one box for now and two for later. That’s how you build up your stock. You reduce inflation costs and save money.”
Crystal has noticed that more and more people are coming to her for advice. She recommends starting with a two-week supply and gradually increasing it.
She currently has a year’s supply of food, but plans to increase it to five years.
“Home is the safest place to be. Keep a two-week supply and gradually increase it. I have freeze-dried food for a year, but my goal is to be prepared for five years."
The family also has first aid kits, warm clothes, and a fire starter kit.
Crystal added: "We have solar generators, survival kits, and emergency food supplies. That's our insurance. Let's hope for the best, but we're prepared for anything."
