At this haunted outpost in Moldova, guards are said to have repeatedly opened fire on a ghostly figure.





In the courtyard of the 15th-century Bender Fortress, located in the unrecognized region of Transnistria, visitors may notice something strange. It is a series of bullet holes in one section of the wall.

They are not lined up in a clear line and do not look like the traces of an ordinary battle. It seems as if they are all concentrated in a place that has been shrouded in a mysterious history for many generations, telling of tragedy, loss and inexplicable phenomena associated with a local legend about a ghost.





Centuries ago, during the Ottoman rule over the fortress, a young Slavic woman (in different sources her name is Maryuka or Viorika) was taken from the neighboring village of Varnitsa by a Turkish military leader and kept within the walls of the citadel as a concubine. Soon she became pregnant. After repeated attempts to escape, the girl was caught and cruelly punished. As a result, after giving birth, the unfortunate woman was thrown from the highest tower, and her child was given to the Janissaries.



Since then, her ghost, who is called the White Lady for her always white dress, according to legend, appears on moonlit nights at one of the towers in the courtyard, as if looking for her lost child. They say that for many years, until recently, guards, taken by surprise by her appearance, opened fire on the figure, leaving marks on the wall.



Many historical fortresses have their own legends about the White Lady, but this story is special. Long after the legend took root, human remains and a copper-colored braid were discovered in the lower part of the fortress, supposedly belonging to that very young woman. Combined with bullet holes on the wall, both from ancient muskets and from modern weapons, this is enough to make many tourists think about how closely truth and fiction can be intertwined in life.
