The most stubborn resident of China gave up and left his home in the middle of the highway
In April, the "Eye of Jinxi" made headlines in China when a highway opened around it. Like other nail house owners, Huang Ping (a pseudonym) refused an offer from the regional government to buy his property and decided to stick with it even after everyone else in the area moved out. At one point, the man received a hefty compensation package of around $223,000, but he refused to agree to pay it in two installments. He later regretted his decision when the government decided to simply build a road around his property, turning it into an insulated nail house.
With no soundproofing whatsoever, the building became virtually uninhabitable once traffic began to move in April. Huang and his family held on as best they could, but the constant noise and flutter of large trucks passing by eventually forced them to move out. It's unclear when they moved out, but people began noticing the broken windows of the house and the weeds growing around the property last month.
The owner of the Jinxi Eye, contacted by local media, confirmed that he and his family had left the house due to constant traffic noise and fear. They chose to rent a place in a nearby town and had no say in what would happen to their old property. Even if the nail house were to be torn down, Huang would only receive a fraction of the compensation he was initially offered.
Social media users were surprised by the man and his family's decision not to sell the house.
"You have to have a strong heart to endure the villagers' ridicule," "Honestly, if the country didn't build roads to improve people's lives, how much would a house in this desolate mountainous area sell for? Would anyone buy it?" they wrote.
