The smell of caramel from the body turned out to be a sign of a deadly disease (3 photos)

A Briton was given the 'worst diagnosis possible' when he suddenly smelled caramel. Stoke-on-Trent businessman Costas Fantis had a heightened sense of smell and was constantly smelling the sweet treat. The 57-year-old suggested it could be linked to the epilepsy he suffered from as a child.





His family advised him to get tested to find out what was causing the strange smell. Costas had a scan and the results were disappointing. He was diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer.

Since his diagnosis in April 2024, Kostas has undergone radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but the family is trying to raise money for treatment in Germany.



Kostas' son Antonio said: "It's strange because he had almost no symptoms. Sometimes he would smell like caramel. But it would happen about once a month and would quickly disappear."

The family was shocked to learn that the "fit and healthy man" had been diagnosed with stage four brain cancer. The tumour was inoperable.



"It just goes to show that you can be in great physical shape and look healthy, but there's something wrong with you," Antonio said. He believes his father still doesn't know how to react, but is determined to continue with treatment.

Costas' family is hoping for treatment in Germany, but the unique vaccine costs £464,000. The foundation has raised over £267,000 so far. Antonio is confident his father will be rewarded for being such a generous person.
