"In less than 20 years, the island's ice cap split into two parts, revealing a surface of several square kilometers. On this sea terrace, we found many whale bones, some skeletons were preserved almost completely," said Nikita Demidov, a research fellow at the institute. The find indicates a strong change in sea level in the Arctic that has occurred in the last thousand years.
