A Time Capsule in the Form of a 53-Year-Old Beetle Found in the USA (35 photos)

An unusual Beetle has been put up for sale in California. The VW Super Beetle rolled off the assembly line in 1972 and became one of a thousand hatchbacks in the special Baja Champion version. However, the main advantage of the car is considered to be its mileage of only 104 miles, or just over 160 kilometers. Despite all the circumstances, only 30 thousand dollars are being offered for the rarity at online auctions.





Volkswagen released the Baja Champion series overseas to commemorate its own victories in various off-road competitions between 1967 and 1971. The main differences between these "Beetles" were the special Marathon Blue body color, themed graphics on the body and badges in the interior, as well as extended chrome trim. The Super Beetle version, also known as the VW 1302, appeared in the Beetle in 1970 as part of another scheduled update. It brought the hatchback a modified front suspension with wishbones and McPherson struts.

It is claimed that the example put up for sale is equipped with a 1.6-liter engine, although in those years, 1.3-liter units were more common. According to official data, it developed 50 horsepower. The engine works with a 4-speed manual gearbox.

The "Beetle" has been preserved almost in its original form simply because the car was hardly used, from the very beginning perceiving it as an exhibition example. The Super Beetle's first owner was a Volkswagen dealership in California, where it remained until 1996, and was later acquired by a collector who added the rarity to his own collection. The heirs of the latter have put the time capsule up for sale.
