Homemade Replica of the First Batmobile Put Up for Auction (20 photos)
A 1979 Lincoln Continental is up for sale at Bring a Trailer. The auction ends today and the current maximum bid is $108,000 at the current exchange rate. The high bid is due to the fact that the Continental was converted into a detailed replica of the Batmobile from the 1960s TV series and equipped with an alternative engine.
The TV series about the adventures of the Black Knight was released between 1966 and 1968, and the car used in it is considered one of the first full-fledged Batmobiles in the history of this character. The car was created by the famous customizer George Barris, who took the chassis of one of the Lincoln concepts of that time. Thus, the creator of the replica paid tribute to historical continuity.
The body panels, copied from the screen prototype, are made of fiberglass. The replica, like the original, has massive tail "fins" and glazing "bubbles", an imitation of a rocket booster and a red flashing beacon mounted on a kind of arch. The interior of the Continental also has imitations of devices used in the Batmobile.
The car is equipped with a 6.5-liter V8, modified with some components from Edelbrock, and a three-speed automatic. The output of the unit is not specified. The original Batmobile was purchased by creator George Barris from the crew after the series ended (it is believed that the deal was for one dollar) and he owned it until 2013, when he sold the car at auction. He managed to get 4.2 million dollars.
