“I Found Human Bones in the Walls of My House and Learned the Scary Truth” (4 photos)
During the renovation of a 16th-century farmhouse, a British woman found human bones in the walls. She also learned that a murderer lived next door.
28-year-old Emmy Brookman and her 34-year-old fiancé Norton Johnston bought a three-bedroom house. Soon after moving in, they noticed pink mold on the walls and were forced to do some renovations.
After the experts presented a bill for $23,000, the couple decided to do the job themselves. To their surprise, they found a bone in the wall. At first Emmy was scared, but then she learned that in the 16th century, bones were put into walls to ward off evil.
They found four bones outside and two inside. Emmy thinks one is a human finger, the others are animals.
The owner of a homewares company from Barrowford, Lancashire, said: "We were removing plaster and something popped out of the wall. It was a bone. I was terrified. We found four more bones in the wall outside. We thought we'd find a whole body."
Emmy bought the 1580s house for $413,000 after falling in love with its "character and quirkiness."
The couple thought it would be easy to just add new carpets and paint. But they soon realized the renovation would require much more work.
The house had the wrong plaster, which held moisture. They had to remove it to get to the stonework.
In August 2024, they began to repair. Instead of the $23,000 they were quoted, they spent only $400.
The Brits were shocked to find bones and a mysterious green bottle filled with ashes and herbs in the walls.
Brookman shared: “We found an article about witchcraft in Kendal and read that the locals really believed in witches. They would put bones and herbs in the walls to ward off evil. We found bones in almost every room.”
The woman returned several finds to their original place: “They are part of the house.”
The couple also discovered that the house next door was home to notorious killer James Hargreaves.
Hargreaves was convicted of assaulting his housekeeper and killing a clerk who served him with a summons.
