The previous adventurer who tried to contact the inhabitants of North Sentinel Island was found murdered.

The Sentinelese are called the most hostile tribe in the world. They live on North Sentinel Island, which is part of the Andaman Islands, and are extremely unfriendly to outsiders. It is impossible to approach the natives closer than a bowshot. They still live like primitive people and are not happy with uninvited guests. Attempts to study the tribe or make friends with the Sentinelese often end in tragedy.

For example, in 2018, they killed American John Allen Chau, who arrived on the island as a missionary trying to preach Christianity to the natives.

Earlier, in 2006, the natives killed two Indian fishermen who were poaching near the island. But Mikhail Polyakov, a 24-year-old US citizen, was lucky. He tried to get to the island three times, and, fortunately for him, each time he failed.

Mikhail Polyakov

The first time in October 2024, he wanted to get to North Sentinel by kayak, but the staff of the hotel in Port Blair, where he stayed, having learned about his plans, managed to stop the adventurer. The second time, Polyakov visited Baratang Island, where he illegally filmed the Jarawa tribe and visited various places in Port Blair. These islanders live by hunting wild pigs, they are not as aggressive as the Sentinelese.

The traveler approached the third attempt more seriously. On March 29, he arrived in the Andaman Islands on an inflatable boat, checked in, assembled the engine, and bought fuel.

Polyakov had studied the tidal chart in advance, carefully examined the shore with binoculars, and only then went ashore.

For an hour, he shouted and waved his arms, trying to attract the natives. Finally, realizing that no one was interested in him, he left coconuts and cola on the sand and left. In order not to leave empty-handed, he collected sand samples and recorded a video. Upon returning to the beach near Port Blair, he was detained by law enforcement officers, to whom Polyakov told that he had previously traveled to Afghanistan to make friends with members of the Taliban*. This remark alone gives an idea of the traveler's intelligence, doesn't it?

According to the Economic Times, Polyakov's father was Ukrainian. He had visited these islands many times, and apparently the son wanted to follow in his parent's footsteps.

In general, visiting North Sentinel Island is strictly prohibited not only for safety reasons: tourists can bring modern diseases into the habitat that will kill the small tribe. De facto, the island is one of the autonomous regions of India. According to rough estimates, about 40 members of the tribe live on it.

The Sentinelese are an indigenous tribe living on North Sentinel Island, which is located approximately 720 kilometers off the coast of Thailand and more than 1,200 kilometers from mainland India

Since Polyakov was filming his adventures, the GoPro found on him contained footage of him landing on the island, which is a direct violation of both local and national laws. The Indian authorities have charged him under the Foreigners Act, 1946 and relevant sections of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Protection of Indigenous People) Amendment Ordinance . The American tourist remains in police custody for further questioning, and the Foreign Office and the US Embassy have been informed of his arrest.
