In Poland, an unknown person “restored” 200-year-old statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary (3 photos)
For more than 200 years, villagers in southern Poland have paid homage to a roadside shrine depicting Jesus and the Virgin Mary. But locals are now outraged after a botched restoration of the shrine from 1820 turned the Virgin into a Simpsons character.
Once described by experts as "tall and slender", the statue of the Virgin Mary near the village of Stuschenka now has huge, mitten-like hands, exaggerated eyes and a scowl accentuated by bright red lipstick.
The authorities have already noted that no permit was issued for such a craft, and have already launched an investigation. Comparative photos were posted on his Facebook page* by a social media user. He was the first to publish photos of the repainted shrine, stating that, apparently, someone took it upon themselves to remake it in a "garden gnome style" using "the cheapest paint from the hardware store."
