A thief climbed into a store through the roof
Police say the burglar entered the store through the roof and ventilation ducts before stealing crisps, cleaning products and food items. Police later tracked down the thief with the "massive" haul.
Officers say emergency services received a call just before 7am from someone who saw "a pair of legs hanging from a hole in the ceiling of the store". CCTV footage shows the thief going down into the store before stealing around £200 worth of National Lottery scratch cards. He also stuffed crisps, cleaning products and food items into a bag before escaping through a fire escape.
"Officers arrived within six minutes of the 999 call and found a man matching the description of the burglar in a nearby street. The 50-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and taken into custody," police said in a statement.
Inspector Liz Gaskin added that officers had been "very efficient and quick" in apprehending the burglar. The police officer said the store was closed at the time of the break-in, so no one was in any danger. "This was a worrying incident for the staff at the store and I would like to thank them for alerting us to the burglary. Hopefully, the news that the burglar has been apprehended will help people get on with their day. And today's incident has shown that criminals will stop at nothing to break the law," the police spokeswoman concluded.
