A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 hit western Turkey today, August 10. Its epicenter was in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province.
According to the Turkish Disaster Management Authority (AFAD), the tremors were recorded at 19:53 local time at a depth of about 11 kilometers. The earthquake was felt in many other cities in the country, including Istanbul (located 200 km from the epicenter), Izmir and Bursa.

In the city of Sindirgi itself, several buildings collapsed - according to preliminary data, there are at least 10 of them.
The mayor of the city, Serkan Sak, reported four people rescued from under the rubble. Videos taken by eyewitnesses are circulating on social networks.
Emergency services are currently working at the scene. The damage is currently being assessed, there are no casualties, but according to some reports, there may be people under the rubble.
After the main shock, several aftershocks were recorded, one of which had a magnitude of 4.6.
In February 2023, Turkey experienced the largest earthquake in decades, a magnitude of 7.7, the consequences of which affected several provinces. The death toll in that terrible natural disaster was at least 50,000 people. That earthquake also affected Syria, where thousands of people also died.
