Priest climbs 250-meter cliff every day
The hero of the video is priest Gebre Rufael, who has served in the cave church of Abuna Yemata Guh in Ethiopia for half a century. It is the most inaccessible religious building in the world, but this does not bother pilgrims: some residents of nearby locations climb up to the church several times a week to attend services.
"I am not afraid when I climb the rock to the temple, because I do it every day," he said in a commentary to the BBC. "It is very difficult, but there is humility in it."
The entire journey from the priest's house to the church takes 2 hours.
The small church is located in a cave on a steep cliff at a height of 250 meters. According to local legend, it was carved into the mountains of Geralta by Saint Abuna Yamata in the 6th century. The walls and dome of the church are decorated with unique frescoes, which have been preserved in excellent condition due to the dry climate. The drawings date back to the first Christians of Ethiopia, and the oldest icons in the temple date back to the 15th century. This is one of 35 rock churches in Ethiopia.
