67-year-old BMW 507 roadster to be sold for 2 million euros (31 photos)
Next week, a rare 1958 BMW 507 roadster will be auctioned at Sotheby's in Paris. The sports car, originally intended for mass production, turned out to be too expensive to produce and was ultimately released in a run of only 252 units. One of the well-preserved examples is expected to fetch between 1,750,000 and 2,000,000 euros.
The roadster, which is to be auctioned, belongs to the so-called second series (Series II). Its main difference from the first batch of cars built in 1956-1957 is a different fuel tank design, which made the interior and luggage compartment more spacious. The sports car was built in May 1958, and a month later it was imported to the Cuban capital of Havana, where it spent about three decades.
In the mid-eighties, the BMW 507 returned to Germany and was acquired by its current owner in 1988. He spent six years and 560 thousand German marks, or about 330 thousand dollars at the exchange rate at the end of 1993, on a complete restoration. The body, originally ivory, was repainted black, and the seats and door panels were trimmed with gray leather. At the same time, the roadster retained the original Rudge wheels with a central nut.
Under the hood is a 3.2-liter V8, but this is not the engine with which the BMW 507 left the factory gates. However, the original engine is also included in the lot, along with the optional hardtop, spare fuel tank and owner's manual.
