Indonesian Hannibal Lecter became an adored star on social networks (3 photos + 1 video)
In 2003, he was arrested in Central Java after the body of an elderly man was found buried in his home.
An investigation revealed that Sumanto not only killed the victim, but also tried to eat her remains. He had previously consumed human flesh while working on a sugar cane plantation, claiming that it gave him supernatural powers.
The press dubbed him the Indonesian Hannibal Lecter. However, despite the severity of his crimes, Sumanto only spent three years in prison. After his release, he faced public scorn, but over time he was able to turn his story into a tool for creating popular content.
Under the pseudonym Sumanto Gereng Reborn, he has become an active social media user. His Instagram account has more than 18,000 followers, where he posts videos, quotes and memes, attracting a wide audience.
Dr. Mulyasari, head of the An-Nur Haji Supono Mustajab Foundation, told local newspaper Beritasatu that the idea to involve Sumanto in content creation came about during an event in the Banyumas area. The social media page was then created, which received an unexpectedly positive response.
"Now Sumanto has become more cheerful, kind and humane. He actively participates in creating content - from satay recipes to village events and sports exercises. We want to show the public that a person can change," said Dr. Mulyasari.
Public reaction
While many speak positively about Sumanto's new image, his activities also attract criticism. Some see this as a chance to show the possibility of rehabilitation, while others doubt the sincerity of the changes. Nevertheless, his presence on social media remains popular, and his videos continue to collect thousands of views.
