Christopher Dunn has been released from prison in the US state of Missouri. He spent 34 years in prison for a murder he did not commit, CBS reported, citing the Midwest Innocence Project. The man was sent to prison when he was 18 years old, and is now 52 years old.
In 1990, Dunn was convicted of murdering a 15-year-old teenager. The prosecution was based on the testimony of two witnesses, who were then 12 and 14 years old. The children claimed to have seen the shooting, but later retracted their statements and said that prosecutors and police had coerced them into testifying. Dunn had an alibi: he was at home with his mother and girlfriend at the time of the teenager's murder, but this did not stop the court from sentencing him to life without parole. Nevertheless, the man's lawyers continued to appeal and insist on his release.
The man was released from a St. Louis jail after his conviction was overturned on July 22. Notably, the state of Missouri does not provide any compensation to innocent people for time spent in prison.
