Fans of the Hershey Bears hockey team set a world record for the number of stuffed animals donated to charity for children.
The Hershey Bears hold a similar charity event every year, and this year they set a record for the number of toys.
Charity hockey games, after which fans throw many teddy bears onto the ice, are held every year - this event is called "Bear Drop". All the toys are collected and taken to orphanages and hospitals as gifts for children. The Hershey Bears club, which plays in the AHL, is most famous for such events in the USA.
Traditionally, in the first game of each year after the first goal, Bears fans throw not only plush symbols of their team onto the ice, but also other toys, and every year Hershey updates its own world records for their number.
Previously, the figure was updated in the range of up to 80 thousand toys, but this year the world record exceeded a hundred - 102,343.
For hockey players, this is not only participation in charity, but also entertainment. They are not at all upset by the fact that the match is interrupted for about half an hour because of the annual event.
Hershey is one of the oldest teams in the AHL. The Bears have been playing in the league since 1938 and have won the Calder Cup, awarded for winning the AHL playoffs, nine times. Hershey was previously a farm club for the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Colorado Avalanche, and has been affiliated with the Washington Capitals since 2005.
