The first person to successfully undergo a face transplant is getting married (4 photos + 2 videos)
In July 2018, Joe DiMeo's life was divided into "before" and "after." After a night shift, he fell asleep at the wheel of his Dodge Challenger, crashed into a guardrail, and caught fire. Two brave bystanders pulled DiMeo from the fire, but 80% of his body was covered in third-degree burns.
The man was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent more than 20 reconstructive surgeries.
In August 2020, 26-year-old Joe became the first person in history to undergo a face and double hand transplant. The operation lasted about 23 hours, and the success rate was only 6%.
Joe before the accident
After learning Joe's story, 33-year-old Jessica Kobe wrote him a message on social media. They soon began a romantic relationship and the woman moved to her chosen one in New Jersey, USA.
DiMeo recently announced his engagement. He shared a photo of himself, Kobe, and their Boston Terrier dogs on social media, captioning the image, "Big things happening December 5th." He also added a bride and groom emoji.
Another photo shows Kobe wearing an engagement ring.
The bride shared the good news: "I think I'm the one, Joe. He proposed to me and I said yes! I can't wait for our wedding."
"At first he seems modest, but he is a very smart and interesting person. I like his tenderness, kindness and masculinity," Jessica said in an interview.
