At the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, researchers have found strange architectural objects whose origin is clearly not related to human activity.





Alternative history fans will certainly immediately attribute these mysterious circles with a central labyrinth to the legacy of Atlantis. Their opponents from the world of esotericism will undoubtedly counter that Atlantis was not here, which means that this is the creation of the Lemurians. Well, the most sophisticated experts will confidently declare that Lemuria is hidden in the Indian Ocean, and therefore the mysterious patterns are the clear signature of the inhabitants of the mythical R'lyeh.

However, the skeptical scientific community was in no hurry to draw conclusions. A decade and a half had passed since divers first discovered these formations in 1995, and the mystery remained unsolved.



The solution came only in 2011, when an underwater photographer who was photographing these circles accidentally captured the "author" of the project. Take a closer look at the photo: in the very center of the structure, approximately at the "three o'clock" position, you will see the real creator.





Meet the white-spotted pufferfish (Torquigener albomaculosus). This fish demonstrates a surprisingly human psychology when it comes to real estate. Females of this species choose a partner by assessing the quality of his "possessions".

To make an impression, the male works tirelessly for several days, using his fins to create a cozy nest up to two meters in diameter, decorated with shells and pebbles. However, this is not about simple luxury.



During the construction process, the pufferfish sifts the sand, placing the smallest fraction in the core of the labyrinth. The survival of future offspring directly depends on the quality of this sand and the chosen location (the presence and strength of the current are important).

If the architectural project is successful, several females will rush to make their contribution to the center of this masterpiece, trusting the eggs to the genes of a talented builder. And those whose creations do not pass the strict female selection will stay the next year to master the basics of engineering.
