Poitou – the shaggy heritage of France (10 photos + 1 video)
Once you set eyes on a representative of the breed, the Bode du Poitou, or simply Poitou, you will not be able to resist falling in love.
About an hour west of La Rochelle, in the quiet village of Dampierre-sur-Boutonne, lies the Bode du Poitou. It is a community center on a historic farm dedicated to the preservation of the Poitou donkey.
In the 1970s, the Poitou population had dwindled to just 44 animals. One of the largest herds belonged to Suzanne Auger on her farm La Tilloderie, which was later renamed L'Azinerie du Baudet du Poitou. The 55-hectare property is part of the Echappées natural network, which guarantees the preservation of wonderful corners of natural beauty in the Charente-Maritime region of France. They are accessible all year round. Wide paths run throughout the historic farm, where you can admire the donkeys and the surrounding forests and fields with their many inhabitants.
The giant shaggy Poitou are a sight to behold and are considered a national treasure of France. This breed is one of the largest in the world. But what really sets them apart is their shaggy, dreadlock-like coat, the cadenets. Some of the most impressive specimens have dreadlocks that almost reach the ground!
This breed was developed centuries ago for the sole purpose of producing what was considered the finest working mule in the world, the Poitevin. The Poitou donkey is forever linked to the Mulacier horse (also known as the Trait Poitevin). This is the winning combination for producing these extraordinary mules, prized for their strength and endurance. At the center, you can meet and get to know everyone - donkeys, horses and mules.
The center offers guided tours and donkey rides. They practically take guests on a tour of the center.
There is also a small museum with historical stalls and items related to these amazing donkeys.
