The lowest recorded temperature in Boston in 1920 was -7 degrees Fahrenheit (-21.7 degrees Celsius) on February 16, 1920.



A man stands on circus strongwoman Joan Rhodes, 1955.

Joan Rhodes was a wrestler, stuntwoman, and strongwoman. Born into poverty, she and her siblings were abandoned by their parents. At 14, she ran away from home and joined a traveling fair, where she got the idea for her act after seeing a professional strongman at work.

James Naismith invented the now-super-popular game in 1891 while teaching physical education at Springfield Christian College.

Downtown Los Angeles during the flood of 1938.

The Los Angeles Flood of 1938 was one of the largest floods in the history of Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside Counties in southern California. The flood was caused by two Pacific storms that swept through the Los Angeles Basin in February and March 1938, dumping nearly a year's worth of rainfall in just a few days. The flood killed 113-115 people.

Funny contest: "The most beautiful monkey", 1972

On June 14, 1972, the cult film "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" was released. And on the same day, radio host Gary Owens held a humorous "Most Beautiful Ape Contest" in Century City (Los Angeles).

The winner of the contest was Dominica Green (girl on the left), she got a role in the future film "Battle for the Planet of the Apes", the fifth film in the series.
