The world's only example in a shade of green Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing will be auctioned off (24 photos)
Mecum Auctions is planning to auction off the world's only 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing in Mittelgrün on August 17. The gullwing-door car is limited to 1,400 examples, and many of them can fetch six-figure prices. This particular 300SL is no exception. It is expected to fetch around $2.5 million.
Mecum experts claim that this Gullwing is the only coupe ever produced that was painted Mittelgrün green from the factory, with a gray-green leather interior and a body-colored dashboard. However, its uniqueness is far from the only reason for the high price expectations.
It is known that since 1973 the car was owned by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation, and between 2015 and 2020 it was even in the speedway museum. In the early 2000s, the car underwent serious restoration work, including a rebuild of the original 3.0-liter 240-horsepower (294 Nm) engine by specialists from Schmidt Automotive Machine Shop and Pacific Fuel Injection. It is worth noting that although the 300SL retained most of the factory elements, the restorers decided to decorate the interior in beige tones instead of the original combination of gray and green.
By the way, this is not the first time that this particular 300SL has changed owners in recent years. In September 2022, the car was already flashed at auction, when it was sold for $ 1.7 million. At the same time, even the current coupe estimate is not a record for Gullwing. The most expensive example went for $ 3.4 million.
